Hydrogeology

Expertise & Experience

Water is a limiting growth factor for many communities and land developments, and groundwater is an important resource. Hydrogeology is the study of the movement and distribution of groundwater in the Earth’s crust. The study of the interaction between groundwater movement and geology can be quite complex and requires specialized expertise. Hydrodynamics understands this complexity, and has the diverse technical expertise and years of experience needed to characterize, develop, and protect groundwater resources. The cornerstone of our technical leadership is our hands-on experience in finding and developing new groundwater sources.

Dr. Bredehoeft is a world-recognized expert in hydrogeology with 45 years experience in both research and high-level hydrogeology project management. He is the author of more than 100 research papers on groundwater. Dr. Bredehoeft managed the entire water research program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Michael King has been a Principal Hydrogeologist on major groundwater development projects for the past 36 years. Mr. King was a partner in a water well drilling company and was responsible for permitting, drilling, testing, and operating over 500 water wells.

Hydrodynamics has completed over 20 groundwater resource basin studies. We have developed numerical groundwater models for nuclear waste transport and inter-basin groundwater resource analysis. We developed 10 natural springs as sources of bottled water and completed over 200 water supply wells.

Hydrodynamics has become a technical leader in the spring water industry, having tackled some of the unique challenges of compliance with FDA spring water regulations. By working with spring owners and regulatory agencies, Hydrodynamics developed a Unified Approach to Spring FDA Compliance.

Hydrogeology Case Studies

Concrete, Washington

Location: Concrete, Washington
Hydrodynamics supervised the redevelopment of the City of Concrete’s Burpe Spring water supply as a source for Advanced H2O’s bottled water plant. U.S. FDA certification of the spring required geological mapping, documentation of spring collection box construction and flows, and chemical…

Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee

Location: Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee
Hydrodynamics conducted a spring water exploration and development program for Bennett Hill Springs. The program required location of a spring source, a watershed analysis, and the development of a spring collection system. The project was sold to Perrier as a source of bottled water based on the…

Truckee, California

Location: Truckee, California
Hydrodynamics developed the private Dobbas Spring source for bottled water sales. We developed and permitted the spring source with the California Food & Drug Administration. A wetland habitat study was completed.

Death Valley National Park (DVNP)

Location: Death Valley National Park (DVNP)
Hydrodynamics, with support from the U.S.G.S., conducted a watershed analysis of the Gold Valley in DVNP to determine the source of high altitude spring waters. The study involved field geology mapping, geophysical surveying, spring flow monitoring, and evapo-transporation climate monitoring.

Funeral Mountains, Death Valley National Park

Location: Funeral Mountains, Death Valley National Park
Hydrodynamics developed a numerical model of groundwater flow through the Southern Funeral Mountain Range in DVNP to characterize inter-basin groundwater flow in the Death Valley Region. The model was based on Hydrodynamics exploration drilling, geological field mapping, and spring flow monitoring.

San Manual Band of Mission Indians, California

Location: California
Hydrodynamics developed three spring sources on the San Manual Band of Mission Indians tribal lands in southern California. The springs were developed as a source of water for bottled water sales. The project required long term monitoring of spring flows for U.S. FDA spring bottled water compliance.
